Description

The Downpatrick Recorder of 10th August 1839 notes "An entirely new house has been erected over the chalybeate well at at the Spa... of wood, of an octagonal construction, beautifully painted, and inside is a metal pump, with a wooden stage for glasses and seats for visitors" 1839. The solitary survivor of three little octagonal pymp-houses erected by David Ker with pumps by Bramah and Son Fec London. The UAH publication of Mid Down notes that "the use of the springs having been ironically forbidden on grounds of public health. Joseph Bramah was the notable inventor, and plumber-in-chief to the gentry, who patented the flushing lavatory." Currently in a very poor state covered in ivy and surrounded by fence wire which is presumably holding the wooden slats together. If restored it would make a charming addition to the area and give more meaning to the history of The Spa.
