Description

The Gransha asylum was built in stages between 1897 to 1933. Between 1902 and 1905 architect Matthew Alexander Robinson designed a block of new buildings for the site. This was built in the Victorian style. The buildings are generally two storeys with symmetrical wings along the centre line. The main entrance has a stucco porch with pedimented head over with ball finial. A tympanum bears the date of construction, 1903. The building is built in brick in Flemish bond. There are various other structures dotted around the site and compared with other asylums in Northern Ireland Gransha is more compact. Despite being complete in 1905 it took over two years for the site to be fully operational due to poor water supplies. The buildings were renamed in 1948 as the ‘Londonderry and Gransha Hospital. The building was abandoned in 2004 and in March 2016 was damaged in a deliberate fire. The buildings are in a very poor condition and partially fire damaged. A building of potential and in need of intervention to save the historic fabric of the building.
