Description

The terrace of four-storey three bay stucco houses, amongst the grandest in early 19th century Belfast and over the years home to many doctors, several knights of the realm, freemasons and Gaelic speakers, an MP and no less than three Mayors of the city. Described as the best surviving example of an 1830s terrace in Belfast, the group were rescued from dereliction after a period of neglect. Despite the loss of much original fabric, the plain Georgian character of the terrace survives and its historic interest is significant as a surviving part of Georgian Belfast William Johnston, who was Mayor of Belfast in 1849 lived in no. 12. In recent years no. 12 has suffered greatly from abandonment and been subject to vandalism, although iron bars were put over the windows these have been broken. Reveiwed May 17.
