Description

TThe one-and-a-half storey, late-19th century gate lodge was the first building within the grounds of the former Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Hospital to be featured as a building at risk (Buildings at Risk, Vol. 1, p. 13). At that time it was deemed to be in quite good order and had been modernised internally. However, in over ten years later, that is no longer the case, as much of its interior has been stripped out or vandalised. While work has been done to secure other buildings in the former hospital grounds, this attractive lodge remains extremely vulnerable, and has suffered fire damage in 2016, whereby metal railings have now been placed around it. When reviewed in 2025 it was noticed that the building was in a very poor state being oopen to the elements with no sign of maintenance occuring. Slates are slipping to the roof in numerous areas and the decline of the structure has accelerated during the last number of years.
