Description

Spencer House is a four-storey building in brick and stucco built in 1883 by Young and MacKenzie. It forms the corner of Lower Garfield Street and faces Royal Avenue, with a corner conical tower to the top level. The first-floor has Ionic capitals spread throughout with panels featuring different animals. The second and third floors have impressively decorated window surrounds adding grandeur to the building. The building was originally built for J C Mayrs & Co Ltd who were manufacturers of cabinets, upholsterers and general house furnishers. The building is in fair condition exhibiting some signs that it is in need of renewal. Paint is flaking from the decorative window surrounds and there is some vegetation growth to the building. Timely intervention and maintenance is likely to be more cost effective over the long term. An impressive and iconic building that is richly decorated with unique features. When reviewed in 2025 it was noted that the building was for sale. The ground floor was fully let and there is still some signs of vegetation growth to exterior of the structure.
