Description

Russell Street was named after Lord John Russell, Prime Minister from 1846-1852. Russell Street is located off The Mall and Nos.10-22 form a brick terrace called Melbourne Terrace after 2nd Viscount Melbourne who was Chief Secretary for Ireland 1827-1828. Russell Street is the only brick-built terrace in the city and Melbourne Terrace was constructed in 1839. Melbourne Terrace is within the Armagh Conservation Area. 22 Russell Street forms part of Melbourne Terrace. It is two-bay, three-storeys, built in Flemish bond brick with burnt stretcher detail. Flat window surround with soldier coursed lintels (burnt headers) and stone cills. Front entrance has carved stone door case with cornice breaking forward at each end on scrolled brackets and plain semi-circular fanlight over, all within a narrow stone architrave. 22 has a basement, shared perron with No.20 over basement. This building is vacant and timely reoccupation would enhance this impressive and architecturally important street. Planning permission was granted in 2021 for change of use from offices to 19 apartments with associated alterations and extensions, demolition work, and associated site works.
