Description

"A B2 listed former school in the T plan built of basalt with a steep slated pitched roof. To the rear is a modern extension and the interior has been altered to some degree also. However, this is a charming building in a rural setting surrounded by trees. To the centre of the gable facing the road is a sandstone carved datestone with initials “F.W.H , M.A.H 1861”. The initials are for Sir Frederick William Heygate 2nd Baronet and his wife Mary Ann Heygate. Bellarena closed its doors in 2019 after a 158-year history. The building is currently boarded up to the doors and windows and showing signs that it is not being maintained. A number of slates have slipped and the guttering is full in places causing it to twist under the weight with water fallings onto the building. With swift action the worst of the decay can be halted. Future sustainable plans for the building would be welcomed. When reviewed in 2024 it was noted that the building is now in full use as an arts centre, craft shop and café. This is welcome news as this will deter decay to the structure.
