Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey/ three-bay timber-framed house sheeted with corrugated metal. The roof is gabled with a central brick chimney (which, according to the owner, replaced the original stovepipe) and metal rainwater goods. Facade faces south-east. The central room is entered by a glazed door at right. There is a single sliding sash window to each room. There is also a kitchen outshot of similar construction at rear.

Historical Information

Former owner believes that this building. was originally a canteen at Watertown, a construction workers’ settlement which sprang up in connection with the building of the Silent Valley in the early 1920s. Evaluation

Although rebuilt, this is a rare survival of the Watertown settlement and is of some historical and social interest. Unfortunately it is shortly to be demolished to make way for a replacement dwelling, but it is hoped that the Water Executive will move it to the Silent Valley for exhibition purposes.
