Exterior Description And Setting

A two and a half storey whitewashed building aligned north-east to south-west, with its main elevation to the road. The roof is gabled, with natural slates, three rendered chimneys (one at each gable and one in middle) and metal rainwater goods. The walls are harled and painted. The south-east (front) elevation is dominated by a large modern shop window in the right half of the ground floor. The left half consists of two 6/6 sliding sash windows and a modern glazed door at centre. There are six 6/6 windows on the first floor: two at left are PVC double-glazed and the remainder are sliding sash. All windows have painted granite cills. The south-west (gable) elevation has two replacement windows at first floor level; that to the right has been enlarged and has a concrete cill. There are also two attic windows, both now infilled. The north-east elevation is abutted by a nondescript one-storey extension. The rear elevation has a large single storey return with pitched roof and sliding metal doors that is a later addition.

Historical Information

This building is shown on the 1834 OS 6” map (sheet 56) as part of the Water Guard Station. Although the Preventive Water Guard was established in 1809, its duties had been transferred to the Coastguard Service in 1820. The photograph in Historic Monuments Record, dated 1977 shows the front elevation of this block to be symmetrical. At ground floor right are two 6/6 sash windows and a panelled door with transom light, the mirror image of that to ground floor left. On the left gable it shows a 4/4 sliding sash window to first floor left and a sheeted loading door at right. The attic openings are 6/6 sliding sashes. Primary Sources: 1.
