Exterior Description And Setting

Three storey two bay rendered and painted end of terrace house. Part of a group of four former houses in the Georgian style facing north west onto Catherine Street (see also HB02/12/024 and 025). Ground floor shop front window across whole width divided by stained mullions (at 600mm approximate centres). Double pane sash window above with painted stone cills and simple plaster architrave. Natural slate roof. PVC rainwater goods. Large chimney to each end of ridge. That to south west brick, that to north east gable rendered with only three of the likely six pots remaining. Date plaque high up on north east gable: ‘1828’ painted sign below advertising funeral directors. Small lean-to returns to rear with casement windows. Side wall of yard demolished for car access. Flat roof shed in concrete brick on site of coach house.

Historical Information

Date plaque gives a construction date for the house of 1828. Building is shown with its four neighbours on 1831 Ordnance Survey Map. On the 1858 Griffiths Valuation it is listed as a Police Barracks leased from Mr Frederick McCausland - a use which had transferred to number 46 on the same street by the 1907 Ordnance Survey. The building has been in use as a funeral parlour for at least twenty years. A pre 1830 building which though badly renovated is important because of its function as part of a group with three listed buildings whose townscape potential and character on Catherine Street would be severely eroded if the building was removed.
