Exterior Description And Setting

A run of ironwork railings comprising two tubular horizontal rails mounted on vertical posts whose tubular sections are ornamented with moulded bases, neckings and moulded caps, the sections housing the rails being square with nail-head mouldings to the faces. Alternate posts are supported by curvilinear struts fixed to the lower rail housings and resting on common base plates with the posts. The railings run for approximately 140 metres within Blackcave North townland in Carncastle Ward and continue on for another 640 metres into Blackcave Ward, giving an overall length of approximately 780 metres. The base for the railings is a plain concrete upstand, buttressed to the seaward side at alternate posts, coinciding with the supporting struts. SETTING: The railings stand in an exposed coastal location and form part of the seaward boundary to the Coast Road, set back from it by a tarmac pavement, with an open view to the sea beyond. At their north extremity the railings run into the end of a smooth cement rendered wall and at their south extremity they run into a smooth cement rendered pier of square section.

The date of manufacture is not known but the style points to a date in the second half of the 19th century, although erection could have been as late as the early 20th century. This is a long and unbroken run of moderately ornamental ironwork railings which, while probably not an original feature of the Antrim Coast Road which was completed in 1842, are of 19th century design and thereby provide an appropriate element of furnishing on this historic and scenic stretch of road
