Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey / three bay gardener’s cottage aligned N-S at the NW corner of the Walled Garden on Inisherk Island, Crom Estate. Pitched natural slate roof with two brick chimneys; one to N gable and one between S and central bays. Half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are wet-dashed and windows are 2/2 sliding sashes with sandstone cills (unless otherwise stated). Principal elevation faces E. There is an open gabled windbreak porch to left end of N bay. It has a pitched natural slate roof with fretted bargeboards and pointed finial. The door has been infilled and replaced with a window. To its right is a window. To its left, each bay has a window (that to left is much diminished in size). S gable is partly abutted by a small lean-to (detailed as house) containing an external toilet. W elevation has an entrance porch with flat concrete roof at right end of central bay. W face has a t+g sheeted door. Right cheek has a small casement window; left cheek is blank. To its left is a window (detailed as façade). Each remaining bay contains a window. Right end of S bay contains an infilled doorway. N gable is completely abutted by a single storey extension with monopitched corrugated metal roof. It has a metal-framed window and timber sheeted door to N face and W cheek. E cheek contains a door. Setting: The gardener’s cottage is situated at the NW corner of the Walled Garden (HB12/02/11C) of Crom Estate. It is reached by a laneway running the length of the N wall and accessed by an ornate pair of wrought iron gates (HB12/02/011A).

Historical Information

Built in the late 1800s to serve as a bothy for the gardening staff. It was converted into a dwelling for a Miss Moran in the 1950s and was occupied by her until 1989. Since then it has been vacant. Secondary sources: 1. Terence Reeves-Smyth, Crom Castle Demesne (National Trust, 1990).

A pleasant cottage located next to the walled garden on Inisherk Island, Crom Estate. It has a strong historical link with the former operation of the gardens and is an interesting element of the estate’s building stock.
