Exterior Description And Setting

An asymmetrical single-storey two-bay thatched direct-entry vernacular dwelling, now vacant, with a range of rubblestone outbuildings; pre-dating 1830 and situated to the south side of Glen Road in the townland of Craigavole, south of Garvagh. Rectangular plan with out-shots to rear. Pitched roof with straw thatch and wire fixings to metal rods; raised masonry verges and rendered chimneystacks to gables. No rainwater goods. Walling is whitewashed lime render over rubblestone; exposed rubblestone with cement pointing to rear; northeast gable has scratch coat; cement render to southwest gable. Windows are missing and without sills; one 2/2 timber sash window with horns and exposed timber lintel to rear elevation. The principal elevation faces southeast; off-centre is a door opening with timber frame, flanked by two window openings at right and single window opening at far left. Southwest gable is blank; corrugated tin awning at mid-level. Northwest elevation has outshot to centre containing a window opening. Right bay has a 2/2 window and a shallower outshot at right. The northeast gable is blank. Setting: Situated in an unspoiled rural
setting south of Glen Road, surrounded by farmland and accessed via a single-track gravelled lane to north. Formerly abutted at northeast gable by an extension (now demolished), adjoining a rubblestone stable at northeast. To south side of lane are two detached rubblestone outbuildings and two small piggeries. Outbuildings all have pitched corrugated tin roofs, remnants of lime render to walls and timber-sheeted doors or half-doors. Piggery to north has Bangor Blue slates to roof. To southwest of site, slightly elevated, is a recently constructed two-storey modern house; L-shaped on plan having pitched natural slate roof with raised stone verges and painted roughcast rendered walls. Historical Information

The present direct-entry, gable hearth thatched dwelling house, notable for its two outshots, is pre-1831 in origin. A rectangular structure is shown on the first edition OS map of 1831-2 which corresponds to the present day thatched vernacular dwelling and a remaining outbuilding to the east. The middle section between these two buildings was originally filled with a second dwelling which has since gone. The dwelling is not listed in the Townland Valuation (1828-40) as it would have been valued under the threshold of £3, but it appears in Griffith’s Valuation (1856-64) occupied by Daniel Hegarty and valued at £1. The farm of around 20 acres is leased from Lady Garvagh. The second edition OS map of 1853 shows two further outbuildings opposite the dwelling houses, and these appear to have survived. The farm passed down the Hegarty family, to Michael Hegarty in 1878, who left the farm to his son Daniel Hegarty (known as Mickey) in 1894, together with the grazing land he owned on the Blackhill and his cattle and farming implements. A ‘springing heifer’ was left to for his wife’s special use that was to be grazed and foddered by his son on the farm. If his son were to marry and his wife did not live agreeably with her daughter-in-law, his wife was to be allowed ‘the room of my dwelling house during her life and all the potatoes she may require for her own food, also one cut of oat meal yearly and a cow kept all the year round and if a calf I allow it to be fed on the farm until it is one year old’. (Will of Michael Hegarty) Michael’s son Daniel Hegarty appears in the 1901 census as a farmer, living in the house with his mother, young wife and baby daughter. Also living in the house was a 13-year-old domestic servant. The thatched, two-room house was designated third class. The house remained in the Hegarty family and was revalued in the First General Revaluation of the 1950s at £2.15s. Dimensions are given of 42x19x10 and the house was then occupied by John Hegarty. The building was listed in 1996 at which time the thatch was under tin. However, the owner, who built a replacement dwelling nearby in the late 1990s, was keen to restore the building and it was rethatched with County Clare water reed, the roof structure renewed and the chimneys rebuilt by 1998. Evaluation

An asymmetrical single-storey two-bay thatched vernacular dwelling, now vacant, with a range of rubblestone outbuildings; pre-dating 1830 and situated to the south side of Glen Road in the townland of Craigavole, south of Garvagh. An increasingly rare example of an intact thatched vernacular dwelling with a range of outbuildings, forming an important and well-preserved vernacular group in a rural setting. Of significant architectural and historic interest, the group is a rare survivor of the vernacular tradition and is of particular note due to having two outshots to the rear.
