Exterior Description And Setting

Storey and a half, three structural bay house in the Georgian style facing west at the lower edge of a group of farm buildings on the upper slopes of Gortnarney townland. At the time of survey building was undergoing a substantial renovation. Central doorway with segmental fanlight above and Georgian pattern sidelights presently removed for renovation. Sash window to each side broken and to be replaced. Sand cement render to walls and natural slate roof with three chimneys presently dismantled. Small garden to front overgrown but with stone pillars to Lislane Road. The structural walls are of rubble basalt but may have squared sandstone quoins. North elevation to Lislane Road with two high level two pane sash windows to attic and remains of one four pane sash off centre below. New window opening broken open to rear. On rear (east) elevation a new return is being built onto the central bay. Projecting 1200mm from the house, there is a door opening facing north and three window openings facing east. One window is in the south corner and returns onto the extension’s south elevation. There are two windows above. On the south gable are two high level windows to the attic each 12 pane sashes. Below a door has been blocked up.

Historical Information

Building first appears on the Ordnance Survey Map of 1905. At the time of the Griffiths Valuation of 1858 the land was owned by a Mr William Ross renting from the Marquis of Waterford. Six members of this family lived in the surrounding townland and it is likely that the house was built by the Rosses. The Loughery Family presently own the surrounding farm and it is a son who is conducting a renovation of the house which has been empty for many years. References OSS 1905 GVB 1858

Evaluation

The house exhibits consistency with the Georgian style and simple proportions and is nicely located exploiting a pleasant view. Whilst it is of later than apparent date it is the only surviving farmhouse of its type in an area where they were common until recently.
