Historical Information

Built by the Belfast City & District Water Commissioners in conjunction with construction of Silent Valley reservoir. Erected as the Chief Engineer’s bungalow. A 1926 map does not show it, implying that it is of later date. However, it would have been built before the completion of the dam in 1932. In 1954, interior modified for reuse as a tearoom. Primary sources: 1. Original map and drawing in DOE Water Service, Westland House, Old Westland Rd, Belfast (cat. no. 2D37, 2D38, 2D39, 2D40).

Evaluation

Of similar style to another corrugated metal house nearby (HB16/02/019).Corrugated metal buildings of this date are now scarce. Moreover, it is of some historical value in its association with the construction of the Silent Valley reservoir. Its proximity to other water-related structures gives it group value.
