Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey vernacular house of c.1820s, which was greatly extended in somewhat ‘organic’ fashion in the 1980s to link to an adjacent one and a half storey former outbuilding. The property is set on the E side of the Tullykin Road, c.3 miles SW of Killyleagh. The original house lies to the S, with its asymmetrical front façade facing W. To the left of centre is the main entrance, which consists of a panelled and glazed door with margined paned fanlight. To the left is a sash window with Georgian panes (6/6), with two similar windows to the right of the doorway. The S gable has a very small sash window at attic level. The N gable has a window as S gable. To the left is a linking ‘corridor’ which bridges the gap between the original house and the former outbuilding to the N. This corridor, which is entirely glazed to the W side, actually extends from a very large lean-to extension which has been added to the rear of the original house (and whose roof rises above the eaves of the original house). The E façade of the extension has three sash windows (1st and 2nd windows 4/4, 3rd 1/1). To the right of these windows the extension projects (this is actually the rear of the linking corridor). This section has a four pane window to the left with a very large glazed section to the right of this (which incorporates a glazed door). To the right of the projecting section the façade turns in again in ‘chamfered’ fashion. There are two very small single pane window to this chamfered section. To the right of the this is the rear of the original outbuilding, which (as he ground level drops at this point), is one and a half / two storey. To this section there is a modern four pane window to the first floor and one to the ground floor. To the right of this is a single storey section (another former outbuilding), which is set further back. The façade of this section has a small six pane window (with modern frame), with a projecting chimney breast to the right. To the right again there abuts a low single storey shed. To the exposed section of the N gable of the one and a half / two storey section is a partly glazed door with a small four pane window to the upper level. The front (W) façade of the of the outbuildings section there are two French door-like windows. To the right of these a large lean-to conservatory projects. This conservatory is partly attached to the single storey section, partly attached to the one and a half / two storey section. Above the lean-to the latter section has a broad modern window, with a further modern window to the right of the lean-to. To the exposed section of the S gable of the latter section there is a modern window to ground and upper level. To the N gable of the N single storey section there is a small stable. The façade of the entire building is rendered and painted. The entire roof appears to be covered in natural slate. The roof to the former outbuildings has an overhang in places. Six rendered chimney stacks. Seven Velux windows to the rear and two to the conservatory.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, which the (almost) contemporary valuation records tell us matched the size of the original section of the present house. It is likely therefore that this original section is that of 1834. The valuers record that the property was newly built at that stage (i.e. c.1820s-30s), was the home of one Samuel Folley and had an accompanying single storey ‘cow house’ to the north, on the site of the former outbuildings. In 1860 the resident is recorded as one Robert McDowell. For much of the 20th century the property was home to the Heaney family, but had become derelict by the 1970s. The present owner acquired the house in the 1980s and added the large extensions, thus linking the original house to the former outbuildings.
