Exterior Description And Setting

Mildly picturesque, low two storey Victorian stuccoed semi-detached house of 1869, with typical features of the period including large gabled half-dormers, canted bay, roof overhang and decorative barges. The property and its matching neighbour is set at the end of a short drive to the N of New Road to the N of Donaghadee town centre. The asymmetrical front façade faces roughly S. Roughly to the centre of the ground floor is the main entrance which consists of a panelled timber door with plain rectangular fanlight all encased with plain pilasters, and a cornice hood supported on decorative consul brackets. Steps to door. To the immediate left of the doorway is a full height gabled bay which projects slightly. To the ground floor of the bay is a single storey canted bay with sash window to each face, sill course, panelled ‘aprons’, cornice course and parapet. To the right of the doorway is a large double sash window with label moulding. To the first floor of the large gabled bay to left is another sash window, with label moulding. To the right is a sash-window set within a half-dormer. This window has a rope patterned moulded surround. Between the large bay and the window to right (i.e. above the doorway) is a small decorative date plaque- ‘1869’. To the first floor of the W gable are two, widely spaced, slightly smaller sash windows. To the right of centre of the rear elevation is a relatively large two storey gabled return. To the W face of the return are two [?]sash windows to first floor. The gable of the return is blank.. To ground floor of the gable is a single storey lean-to shed projection. To the ground floor of the E face of the return are two sash windows with vertical glazing bars (2 panes over 2). To left of these windows there is a timber sheeted door. The rear façade of the main house has a sash window (2/2) to ground floor right (W) of the return, with another two to ground floor left of the return (both plain glazed and of differing size). To immediate left of the return, at stair landing level, is a sash window with margin panes. To the first floor are two smaller sash windows. The front façade and main gable are finished in lined render with in-out quoins. The rear elevation (including the return) is in brick. The slated gabled roof has an overhang with decorative barges. Rendered chimney stack to W gable with another to E side (shared with no.33. Cast iron rw goods. Two storey brick outbuilding to rear.

Historical Information

As the date stone on the front façade tells us, this house and its neighbour date from 1869. They were apparently built by a Mr Dickson, whose descendants lived in no.35 until 1938.
