Exterior Description And Setting

Four highly skewed segmental arches carry the main Newry – Hilltown road over the Clanrye River. Of random granite rubble throughout with angled cutwaters on the upstream face (to arch spring level). The road rises from W to E, as do the heights of the arches. No evidence of soffit widening. Modern rubble stone facings have been added along the abutments and around the feet of the piers. Both parapets have been rebuilt in random rubble (but inappropriately coursed and coped). Delisted/relisted 19th December 2001

Historical Information

A bridge is shown on the 1834 OS 6” map. It is captioned Derryleckagh Bridge on the 1860 edition. Probably of late 18th/ early 19th C date. Primary sources: 1. PRONI OS map, 1st edition (1834), Co Down sheet 47. 2. PRONI OS map, 2nd edition (1860), Co Down sheet 47.

Evaluation

Typical of late 18th/ early 19th century bridges in terms of its construction. Although its size gives it some architectural merit, its principal interest lies in the use of skew arches of increasing height.
