Exterior Description And Setting

A pair of single storey buildings each of two bays. That on the right (south-west) is direct entry and thatched. That on the left (north-east) is without an entrance and the roof is of corrugated iron. The building faces north-west overlooking a secondary road that travels in a north-easterly direction from the road from Belleek to Pettigoe. about three miles from the former town. The thatched roof covering is contained within concrete parapet gables each of which rises to a low chimneystack with narrow concrete copings. The right hand stack is provided with a spark arrester. Three rows of scollops are exposed at the ridge with one row at the eaves. The entrance to the thatched house, served by a door of modern timber sheeted construction, is flanked on either side by a vertically sliding margined paned window without sash stops and with splayed sills of traditional depths. At the rear one similar window remains in the rear wall of the living room. The kitchen extension at the rear has a pitched roof covered with cement fibre slates, plastic rainwater goods and modern windows. The section that is covered with corrugated iron terminates in a concrete parapet gable at the north-east end. At the front there are three plastic framed margined paned windows, that in the centre opens fully to provide an escape function and those on either side are top hung. The sills are narrow. There are two similar windows at the rear.

Historical Information

A smaller building than present is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834 / 35, but is not noted in the near contemporary valuation. The house appears in a longer form on the revised map of 1859. The occupant is recorded in the 1859 valuation as Daniel McGarrigal, with John C. Bloomfield the immediate lessor and the rateable value calculated at 10/-. As time progressed the byre was adapted for habitation with a centrally placed front door flanked on either side by a window and it has now been incorporated into the existing house in the process losing its entrance door and having the plastic-framed windows inserted. Evaluation

A pair of single storey buildings each of two bays. That on the right (south-west) is direct entry with a thatched roof. That on the left (north-east) is without an entrance and the roof is of corrugated iron. Retention of the thatched covering and the traditional form of the early roof structure in the thatched portion is of considerable interest and the layout is still discernible.
