Exterior Description And Setting

A much altered two storey (+attic)/ three bay house aligned E-W along Main Street. Pitched artificial roof with two cement rendered chimneys - one to left gable and the other set to right of centre – a third chimney to right gable now gone. Advanced eaves course carries moulded metal rainwater goods. Principal elevation faces S. Walls are cement dashed and painted over a smooth rendered and painted basecourse. Stepped dressed stucco quoins to façade only – now painted over. To centre is an elegant Ionic doorcase with semi-elliptical spider-web fanlight over. Each column rests on a painted stone plinth with roundel to front face. Door is timber four-panelled with beaded muntin and is accessed by four stone steps. To either side of doorcase are two windows to ground floor. Aligned above to first floor are five windows. All are 8/8 uPVC casements with painted stone cills. All openings are unequally spaced and have smooth cement rendered and painted architraves. Left and right gables are blank with smooth rendered eaves band – the left gable formerly had two small windows to attic level. Rear elevation is much altered and of little interest. The original fenestration pattern is barely recognisable with the insertion of modern openings. All windows are modern uPVC casements with concrete cills with modern glazed timber doors.

Historical Information

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6” map. It was not possible, however, to ascertain its dimensions from the valuation book, and thus determine whether these matched the existing building. Rowan suggests a c.1820 date. The first survey slide dated October 1972 shows this building with pitched natural slate roof and three red brick chimneys. Walls are wet dashed with dressed quoins. All windows are 8/8 sliding sashes. The left gable contained two small windows to attic level. To rear is an outbuilding in poor condition. Primary sources 1. Evaluation

Although this well proportioned building with central doorcase has been extensively refurbished, it remains of high townscape character contributing positively to the village.
