Exterior Description And Setting

Rotary type pump with undecorated splay shaped column. When surveyed in 1993 only the column remained. It was inscribed ‘J Scott Junr/Plumber/Cookstown’ When visited in 1996 the pump had been removed. It was subsequentlty repaired and positioned outside the public library

Pump cited here on the 1906 OS 25 inch map (PRONI OS 10/5/42/13/1) when the location was known as Pump Street. The Provincial directory notes W.J. Scott as a plumber in Union Street, Cookstown from 1890 (possibly 1885). He moved to James Street in 1913, where he traded as W.J. Scott & Son, plumbers, heating and electrical engineers until the 1990s. Repaired and moved to its current location ouside the public library post 1996

Evaluation

Rotary pumps of this type are now rare and this pump is a lasting reminder of the times when people has to use the town pump for drinking water.

General Comments

This pump was originally situated on King Street , but it had been neglected and had lost its top. The pump was then repaired and replaced in the current prominent position outside the Library.
