Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey terrace house, of possible pre 1834 origin, with general urban vernacular appearance, but now including a modern shop front and modern window frames. The block is set on the NE side of Downpatrick Street. The front façade faces roughly SW. To the right of centre is the entrance to the house (No.38) which consists of a partly glazed stable door. To the left of this is the modern shop front (No.36) and to the right a house window with modern frame. To the first floor are three similar (unevenly spaced) windows. The front façade is rendered and painted. To the rear there is a long, modern looking, single storey flat roofed extension which covers all of the ground floor. To the first floor are two widely spaced small windows with modern frames. The rear façade is rendered. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate to the front (with slates decreasing in size as nearer to the ridge). Artificial slate to the rear. Two brick chimney stacks. The rw goods appear to be mainly PVC.

Buildings are shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, which the contemporary valuation returns indicate were two storey. Thus the block we see today may be pre 1834, but if so, was probably built shortly before this as little existed in Crossgar prior to 1810 apart from the original RC church and (so accounts suggest), only around ten houses. The block itself was originally a single dwelling, which the c.1863 valuation returns tell us was then occupied by a John Craig. A photograph dating from 1966 shows that the property had a shop front at that stage, which may well have been 19th century. The building was substantially renovated in the 1980s.
