Exterior Description And Setting

A symmetrical three-bay two-storey-with-attic former manse; built c.1859 and located to the north side of Tullinisky Road west of Dromara. Rectangular on plan with projecting porch and single-storey glazed canted bays to front; two-storey gabled return with single-storey slated lean-to to rear. Hipped natural slate roof with blue/black angled ridge tiles and rendered chimneystacks to centre of gable having tall clay pots. Cast-iron half-round rainwater goods on projecting eaves. Walling is painted smooth render, horizontally lined to ground floor with raised quoins and a contrasting plinth. Windows are 6/6 timber-framed sliding sash in moulded surrounds with projecting painted masonry sills; multi-paned windows to canted bays with continuous sills. The principal elevation faces east and is five windows wide to first floor; to centre at ground floor is a projecting porch (later) flanked by canted Edwardian bay windows, sills at floor level. Porch opens to south with a six-panelled timber door having brass door knob and cast-iron lion-head knocker; east elevation has two windows and single window to right cheek. The south elevation has two windows to ground and first floor (that to first floor right is a dummy window). The west (rear) elevation is abutted to right by the two-storey return which catslides to right. Left bay has a window to centre at first floor and is abutted at ground floor by the modern conservatory. Return has a window to first floor left and is abutted at ground floor by the slated lean-to extension; south elevation (flush with south elevation of main block) has a 3/6 gabled dormer to first floor and two 3/3 windows to ground floor. The north elevation has two windows to first and ground floor. Setting Set on a large mature site north of Tullinisky Road on the fringes of Kinallen Village. House is positioned to the northwest of the site and is lawned to front and south with long tarmac driveway from entrance to southeast. Tarmac yard to rear enclosed by roughcast rendered wall and accessed to northeast via a set of modern gates; two-storey rendered former coach house to west with hipped slate roof, louvered vents and timber-sheeted door to openings at first floor; timber-sheeted carriage doors and window to ground floor. Cast-iron latch gate with arrow-head railings to northwest and southeast of yard. Modern housing development on neighbouring land to east, partially screened by mature trees. Historical Information

Kinallen Manse, a two-storey Victorian house located in the townland of Tullinisky, was constructed c. 1859, first appearing on the second edition of the Ordnance Survey map in that year; the building was the residence of the Minister of First Dromara Presbyterian Church (see HB17/11/010) who previously resided at Marybrook farm (HB17/11/016). In 1859 the Ordnance Survey map shows that the manse had not been significantly altered since its construction; the map depicted the building, which was captioned ‘The Manse,’ as an L-shaped structure possessing a rectangular outbuilding to its rear. The contemporary Griffith’s Valuation (1861) recorded that the congregation of First Dromara Presbyterian leased the site from a Mr. William Henry Waugh; the manse was initially valued at £18 10s. And occupied by the Rev. William Craig. Over the next seven decades the Annual Revisions note that Kinallen Manse was home to seven ministers of First Dromara; the longest residing occupant was the Rev. William George Glasgow who lived in Tullinisky from 1896 to 1918. The 1901 Census notes that Glasgow (32) resided at the manse with his wife Margaret (29) and their infant daughter; the census building return described the manse as a 1st class dwelling consisting of 13 rooms and possessing a stable, two cow houses and a barn amongst its out offices, located in the outbuilding to the rear of the site. Glasgow resided at Kinallen Manse until his death in 1918 at which time the property was occupied by the new minister, the Rev. Franklin Sidney King Jamison who remained at First Dromara until his own death in 1942. The only discernible alteration to the layout of the site since 1859 was the addition of the front porch, which was added in the late-19th century and can be seen on the third edition of the Ordnance Survey map (1903); the valuation of the manse was not changed during the remainder of the Annual Revisions which ended in 1928. McClelland states that prior to the construction of Kinallen Manse, the ministers of First Dromara Presbyterian resided at Marybrook farm in Kinallen townland; the farm was originally purchased by the congregation in 1795 for £300 by the Rev. James Jackson Birch. In 1858 Kinallen manse was constructed, at a cost of £600, during the ministry of the Rev. William Craig. The manse continued to be utilised as the residence for the minister of First Dromara until it was sold in July 1989; a new manse was opened in 1990 (Kirkpatrick; McClelland; Lisburn.com website). Kinallen Manse was listed in 1977 and has been used as a private dwelling since it was sold in 1989, a modern conservatory has been added to the rear of the house in recent years. A symmetrical three-bay two-storey-with-attic former manse; built c.1859. The dwelling has good proportions and Victorian detailing, including centred chimneystacks and original fenestration. Much historic fabric and detailing survive and it is of interest as the new manse for the local Presbyterian Church(HB17/11/010), reflecting the development of Presbyterianism in the district. This is a good example of a more refined rural Manse of the mid-Victorian period in its original setting.
