Exterior Description And Setting

Small two storey/ two bay house, second one from the right end of a terrace. Pitched artificial slate roof without chimney (it possibly rises out of wall head of taller building to its right). Painted modern rainwater goods with down pipe to right. Front elevation is cement rendered and painted with an advanced basecourse. Modern six panelled front door at ground floor left. There are three windows - one at ground floor right and two to first floor. All are 1/1 sliding sashes with deep painted cills. Left gable is finished as front elevation. The gable is crenellated and steps up to a broad plinth supporting a reclining lion, staring across to his match on gable of no6 (see HB16/11/013F). This elevation has two windows, one to each floor, as others, but first floor one has an additional spoke headed fanlight. Rear elevation not inspected. Right gable forms party wall with the adjacent house (HB16/11/013M).

Historical Information

A house on this spot is described in the 1835 Valuation as measuring 34ft x 18ft x 8ft high. By 1863, it had become two storeys high and increased its footprint to 5yds x 15.5yds. This suggests a mid 19th C rebuild, probably contemporary with the construction of nos 5 and 6 (HB16/11/013E and /013F). Primary sources: 1. First Valuation book, 1835 (PRONI, VAL/1B/367, p.103). 2.
