Exterior Description And Setting

Right one of a pair of small two storey/ two bay houses set in a longer terrace. Pitched natural slate roof with shared chimney at left. Modern rainwater goods with common down pipe. Walls are pebbledashed with thin cement rendered margin to right corner. Modern glazed front door at ground floor right has a plain transom over. There are three windows - one at ground floor left and two smaller ones to first floor (all enlarged original openings). All are modern side hung casements with top-hung transoms and thin concrete cills. Small area to front enclosed by modern wrought iron railings on a dwarf wall. Right gable is finished as front elevation. Gable has stepped crenellations rising to a broad plinth supporting a reclining lion staring across to his match on gable of no.12 (HB16/11/013L). This elevation has two windows, one to each floor, detailed as the others. Rendered dwarf wall to front area carries plain spiked railings and gates. Left gable forms party wall with adjacent house Rear elevation not inspected.

Historical Information

Although buildings are shown here on the 1834 Valuation town map, it is not until the 1861 map that the present house is shown. It is described in the Second Valuation book as measuring 7yds x 5.5yds by 2 storeys high, with a one-storey return. Primary sources: 1. Valuation town map, 1834 (PRONI, VAL/1D/3/2). 2. Evaluation

This unusual building, with its crenellated gable topped with a lion, forms with no12, a pair of pavilion like buildings symmetrically flanking the large house (9 Havelock Place, HB16/11/013I) which is set back an equal distance between the two. No.9 was once the Royal hotel, and that might explain the regal lions on these gables.
