Exterior Description And Setting

A two storey, three-bay, lobby entry house with corrugated iron roof covering between concreted skews. A corbelled brick chimneystack, with two pots, rises right of centre to serve the kitchen fireplace. Rainwater goods are of plastic. The building that faces north-east is accessed by means of a stone built entrance screen and a short driveway leading off the road from Clady Milltown to Keady, a short distance to the west of the former village. The construction of the front elevation is of random rubble stone including voussoirs over the lower windows and the entrance. The left hand (south-east) gable is slate-hung, the right hand (north-west) gable is roughly plastered above the roof of an outbuilding and the rear is of roughcast made up of finer aggregate in the case of the extension. The four-panelled entrance door is set within a projecting gabled porch with a cast iron roof covering and decorative bargeboard surmounted by a moulding. A stone apron occurs in front of the porch. To the right (north-west) of the porch there is a window at each level with two similar arrangements to the left (south-east). The upper windows are of reduced height and display indications that they have been altered in the past. This is the case also in respect of the lower right hand window that may once have been a pair. All of the windows are vertically sliding with sashes divided into two vertically. The boxes are exposed and the sash stops are curved. The lower windows and the entrance are set in cement surrounds. On the first floor the surrounds are reduced in width. The sills, of stone below and of concrete above, are of traditional depths. At the rear starting from the north-west corner there is a window lighting the ground floor similar to those at the front and with a vertically sliding window above with a sash of two horizontal panes above a plain sash. Boxes are exposed and there are no sills. Next the kitchen is lighted by a large modern timber-framed window with top hung openers in the outer sections. The concrete sill is of traditional depth. Above a vertically sliding window with plain sashes has exposed boxes and a narrow sill. The extension with corrugated iron roof is lighted on the ground floor by a two light modern timber-framed with a top hung opener in the right hand section. The bathroom has a single modern top hung window. Finally beyond the extension there is a single top hung window at each level.

Historical Information

The house and the first outbuildings on either side of the farmyard that proceeds in a north-westerly direction appear on the 1st edition OS map of 1834-35 and also on the 1st revision OS map of 1860. A two storey, three-bay, lobby entry house retaining a covering of thatch under corrugated iron. The house faces north east and is accessed by means of a stone built entrance screen and a short driveway. The internal layout remains as original apart from modifications necessary to provide access to the rear extension. The staircase with a door at the half landing is of interest. The building is at least early 19th. C and possibly much older.
