Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey, three bay direct entry thatched house with a rendered and whitened external finish. The building extends to the south-east with a corrugated iron roof to accommodate a donkey house and a byre. Across the roadway to the west the piggery is of exposed stone with a thatched roof. The house that faces south-west is situated on the east side of a lesser road that proceeds from Ballinamallard to Irvinestown about two miles from the latter town. The thatch covering that is contained within concrete parapet gables extends over the projecting entrance porch. Each gable rises to a corbelled and flaunched chimneystack with semi-circular tile bedded along its length. A similar feature serves the kitchen hearth. The entrance with a timber sheeted door in a square-jambed windbreak porch is flanked to the left (north-west) by two and to the right by one vertically sliding window with sashes divided vertically into two panes. Sash stops are splayed and sills are of intermediate depths. This is the full extent of the fenestration of the house. The outbuildings that abut the south-east gable of the house are roofed with corrugated iron that terminates in a tight verge. The entrance doors are of ledged and sheeted timber. A small lean-to store of corrugated iron construction is positioned against the gable. Across the roadway the thatched roof of the piggery is contained within stone parapet gables, part cemented. The interior that is divided into two is entered by timber ledged and sheeted door, one at the front (south-east) and the other on the south-west side.

Historical Information

A building which appears to match the present is shown on this site on the OS map of 1833. Unfortunately the first valuation as the valuation map of the area (actually a copy of the OS map but with the valuers’
references and annotations) is missing from PRONI, however the accompanying valuation book states that ‘there are no houses in this townland worth £5 per annum’, so the property was not included in the valuation anyway. In the second valuation of 1858 the house is recorded as the home of a Patrick McLaughlin with the representatives of James Douglas noted as the lessors, and the rateable value a lowly 15/-. The building was thatched by the owner in 1979, Mr Patrick McDonnell, using rye straw that he had grown for the purpose. The condition of the house in 1992 was fair. By 1994 the condition had deteriorated and a repair scheme that was underway at the time of the survey in May was reported as complete in March 1995. Enterprise Ulster was involved in the work. Evaluation

A single story, three bay direct entry thatched house with a rendered and whitened external finish. The building extends to the south east with a corrugated iron roof to accommodate a donkey house and a byre. Across the roadway to the west the piggery of two compartments is of exposed stone with a thatched roof. The buildings have been restored to an acceptable standard retaining all detail of the roof structure, windows, doors and fireplaces.
