Exterior Description And Setting

The house faces south behind a small garden a distance of two fields away from the Belleek/ Pettigoe road about two miles from the former town. A single-storey, three-bay direct entry thatched house with plastered and whitened wall finish. The front elevation that has a projecting plinth terminates in non-alternating quoins all coloured black. The thatched covering is contained within parapet gables with that on the right (east) rising to a chimneystack with projecting flaunched top and containing one pot. A similar stack with two pots rises over the position of the kitchen hearth and another stack with one pot occurs over the parlour fireplace. The panelled entrance door glazed in the upper part is flanked to the left (west) by one and to the right by two plastic framed top-hung windows. The sills are of traditional depths. A similar window is set in the rear wall of the parlour. There are no openings in the gables. A lean-to shed abutting the east gable of the house is roofed with corrugated asbestos sheeting and is entered by a timber-sheeted door. A short corridor connects the house to the extension that is rendered to match the main house. Cement fibre slates are used on the pitched roof and the rainwater goods are of plastic.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834-35, but is not noted in the near contemporary valuation. The house appears in a longer form, (extended eastwards), on the revised map of 1859, with the occupant is recorded in the valuation of that year as James Mulherin, with John C. Bloomfield the immediate lessor and the rateable value calculated at £1-10-0. The front slope of the roof was re-thatched in 1992 and rear slope in 1994 (using reed), with the front patched in the latter year also. Further repairs were carried out in 1999, with a complete re-thatch in 2002 undertaken by Billy Kilpatrick. Provision of an extension was discussed in 1993 taking into account the advice offered by EHS / PHB in 1991. Evaluation

A single storey, three bay thatched house with whitened plastered walls. The layout into which the access corridor has been inserted remains recognisable. The extension follows the design suggested by EHS/PHB (22 February 1991) particularly in respect of the link and the pitched roof together with absence of fascias and bargeboards. Despite the insertion of plastic framed windows the shape of the early openings are untouched. The roof structure has been confirmed as remaining in traditional form.
