Exterior Description And Setting

A two bay gate lodge with cross-gabled two storey right bay (aligned N-S) and single storey left bay (aligned W-E) situated at the E entrance to Crom Estate. Pitched natural slate roof with fretted bargeboards and pointed finials to gables. There is an ashlar sandstone chimney with advanced stepped chimney breast to centre of E elevation. Overhanging boxed eaves support half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are painted lime-rendered over a slightly advanced base course. Windows are 2/2 timber sliding sashes with painted stone cills (unless otherwise stated). Principal elevation faces S. The cross gable has a canted bay with hipped natural slate roof to ground floor. Each face contains a window (that to S face is wider). Above is a window to apex. The left bay is blank. Abutting in the angle of the two bays, and advancing slightly, is a projecting gabled entrance porch (detailed as house), which rises to eaves level of cross-gable. S face has a t+g sheeted door. E face abuts cross-gable. W face has a 4x1 fixed lattice paned window with concrete cill. Behind porch, set in the angle of the two roofs, is a raised skylight with hipped natural slate roof. It is glazed to W and blank to S. W gable has a canted bay detailed as that to façade. N elevation is completely abutted to ground floor by an extension. The exposed first floor of the cross gable has a top-hung timber casement window. Extension roof is flat and felted and walls are as house. N face has a t+g sheeted door to left. To centre and to right is a timber casement window. W cheek is blank. E face has a long narrow landscape window below eaves. E elevation is blank (but has central sandstone chimney breast (see above). Setting: The lodge is set within a small garden at the E entrance to Crom Castle Estate.

Historical Information

Thought to have been erected c.1840, but not to a design by Edward Blore. This building is first shown on the 1857 OS 6" map, and is explicitly captioned "Gate Ho". Primary sources: 1. OS 6" map, 2nd edition, 1857, Co Fermanagh sheet 39 (PRONI OS 6/4/39/2). Secondary sources: 1. Terence Reeves-Smyth, Crom Castle Demesne (National Trust, 1990).

A picturesque little 19thC gate lodge situated at the E entrance of Crom Castle Estate. Although it has been refurbished it retains many original features of interest and is of importance within the Crom Estate group.
