Exterior Description And Setting

A twin-arched masonry bridge over the Glynn River, built of squared rubble basalt in irregular courses; angled cutwaters on both sides to arch springing level; abutments and pier below springing level regularly coursed; rusticated voussoirs to the segmental arches, with tooled edges; copings of irregularly shaped stones set on end; abutments show a slight batter and wing walls are returned square. Voussoirs, cutwaters, and abutment edges are of lighter coloured stone; cutwaters repaired with cement. Setting: the bridge stands in a very rural location with open agricultural land all around.

Evaluation

This is a good example of early Victorian bridge engineering of distinct style and proportions, built using traditional masonry construction, and enjoying a pleasant rural setting. Attributable to a leading Irish architect and engineer it is also of some local interest as a 19th century bridge which has retained its original appearance in an unaltered state.
