Exterior Description And Setting

A small two-storey gabled house forming the left hand end of a terrace of four houses which steps up a hill from left to right. Main entrance faces west. West elevation is three windows wide. Roof of Bangor Blue slates in regular courses, continuous with the roof of adjoining house to right and contained by cement gable upstand to left; dark toned ridge tiles; one chimney, on left hand gable, constructed of red firebrick with projecting string course; one modern pot, with cowl, of red terracotta. Overhanging eaves with cast iron gutter and circular cast iron downpipe to left hand side. Walling is rubble stonework roughly rendered, limewashed and whitened, incorporating brick quoins to left hand extremity; lower part of brickwork and small portion of stonework revealed. Windows rectangular timber sliding sash, vertically hung, 2 over 2, with horns, painted white, with exposed sash boxes painted green. Whitened reveals; projecting concrete cills painted green; windows to first floor tucked up under eaves. Door rectangular timber ledged with rectangular fanlight of three panes; brass replacement handle and latch to traditional pattern; modern plain brass letterbox; concrete doorstep. North elevation comprises the north gable: walling as to entrance front, with area of whitened brick below chimney; brick chimney on apex of gable. Projecting verge courses linked by projecting string course at base of chimney. Projecting forward from right hand extremity is a dry stone wall of basalt rubble. Rear elevation: two-storey; roof slated as to front; one small original rooflight. Walling as previous to entrance front, but red brick segmental arch and dressings to right hand ground floor window, whitened; traces of brick dressings to other openings visible beneath surface render. Windows similar to entrance front except left hand first floor which is timber fixed light with top-hung vent and contains translucent glass. Door rectangular timber ledged with rectangular fanlight set in whitened brick dressed opening. To right of left hand ground floor window at ground level there is a small rectangular timber ledged door to a small brick lined recess in the thickness of the wall to contain gas cylinder; recess created in 1950s. Cast iron gutter with circular cast iron downpipe to right hand side; PVC soil pipe to left hand side. Concrete area to rear of house enclosed on left hand side by a whitened rubble stone wall to first floor height, containing window opening blocked up with concrete block, originally the side wall of the rear return of the adjoining house, now a screen wall. Setting: the house stands on the east side of the main street in the village, facing directly on to the street. It stands at the left hand extremity of a terrace of houses which steps up to the hill to the right. There is a grassed area immediately to the north, which is part of the garden of No 6, retained by a dry stone boundary wall to the main road. To the rear is a flower garden containing garden sheds. Boundary to north side of rear garden is formed by a hedge, with a small wooden gate to the west and the rear wall and roof of a pig-house in the garden to No 6, to the east. Boundary to south side of rear garden formed by a rough wooden fence.

This is a house in a vernacular Georgian style, displaying the proportions and details associated with the style, and retaining the essence of its original exterior appearance. It enjoys a pleasant setting and, with the rest of the houses in the terrace, forms part of an attractive and important group which is of considerable local interest.
