Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey gabled house with a central gabled single-storey entrance porch to the front and a two-storey return to the rear. Main entrance faces south-west. Entrance front symmetrical, five windows wide to the first floor, with two windows to each side flanking the porch. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses with overhanging eaves; chimney to each extremity of ridge, of yellow brick with moulded cornice. Walls rendered with dry dash (replacement for original wet dash) with smooth cement render to corners, plinth and platband, of no historic authenticity. Windows modern replacements (look like PVC), fixed lights, for original timber sashes. Later porch slated as main roof, with pierced timber barge board and turned wooden finial, with smooth cement rendered walls, painted. Rectangular doorway in front comprising a modern neo-Georgian style timber door with plain sidelights and fanlight, inappropriate, with rectangular window to each side wall of porch, modern timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. PVC rainwater goods. Left-hand gable of house rendered as entrance front, with two platbands, staggered with that on front, inappropriate. Rear elevation of house and return rendered with dry dash, and exhibiting a number of rectangular windows, modern, comprising small panes and fixed light types with top-hung vents, all inappropriate; PVC downpipes. SETTING: The building stands in a rural area, facing the main road, but set back a distance from it at the end of a long driveway, all surrounded by open agricultural land with distant views to the sea beyond at the rear. Hard surfacing immediately in front of house with an extensive concrete yard to the rear. There are a number of outbuildings to the rear, of no architectural quality or interest.
