Exterior Description And Setting

Small, plain, two storey stuccoed terrace house of probable late 19th century construction, with large, modern framed, window to ground floor front. The property is set on the N side of The Vennel, at the W end of the terrace. The front elevation faces roughly S and is asymmetrical. To the right of the ground floor is a panelled timber door with rectangular two pane fanlight. To the left of the doorway is a large picture window with modern frame. To the first floor are two plain sash windows. The front façade is finished in painted render with plain quoins to left (W). Traditional style (but no doubt recent) projecting street lamp to left on first floor. The W gable is finished as front but without quoins. No openings to gable. The rear elevation is finished as gable. To the left hand side on the ground floor is a small lean-to with small window having modern frame to N face. To right of the lean-to is a recent partly glazed door. To the first floor are two plain sash windows. The gabled roof is slated. There are two polychrome brick chimneystacks. The rw goods appear to be a mixture of cast iron and PVC.

VENNEL STREET Prior to the building of the Coast Road in the 1830s, Vennel Street or ‘The Vennel’ was the main road to Glenarm from Larne and the south. As the name, ‘Vennel’ (archaic Scots- ‘a narrow winding lane’), and its sloping topography suggest, it was the least attractive of the village’s four main streets. This is reflected in the fact that the earliest leases concerning the area (which date from 1743 onwards) refer to it as the ‘Stinking Vennel’ or ‘Stinking Vennel Street’ and repeatedly mention ‘waste tenements’. John O’Hara’s map of 1779 shows many small densely packed dwellings along both sides of much of its length. During much of the next century and a half, however, most of this housing was replaced- the 1832 OS map showing a very large gap on the south side, the annotations to the second valuation records showing much post 1859 rebuilding on the north side, and the 1900s OS plans and photographic evidence showing that most of the present south side appears to be early 20th century. No.2 The site of the present property is shown vacant on the 1859 valuation map. Photographic and map evidence shows the present house was in place by c.1903, all of which suggests, that, like nearly all of the north side of the Vennel, the property dates from the latter decades of the 19th century. Judging by the polychrome brick chimneystacks, it is possible that the building may be as late as the 1880s.
