Exterior Description And Setting

A 3 bay wide 3 storey high public house with basement and small back return. The ground floor street elevation has 2, 4 panelled entrance doors almost side by side, each with shallow plain fanlight. On either side of each doorway thin pilasters. Door to right leads into ground floor; door to left is now a false door and does not open. To left of that door a single pane large squarish window with embossed glass and McCarroll's Bar imprinted in gold lettering. On each side a pilaster. Over window and continuing over both doors a name fascia. To right of right-hand door a rectangular timber window, sliding sash, 1 over 1, with horns, set in moulded surround. At 1st floor 3 no. D/H S/S 2 pane windows, evenly spaced and centred on façade, each with matching architraves as ground floor. AT 2nd floor likewise 3 no. D/H S/S 2 pane windows with similar architraves but all of lesser height and with heads under eaves. There is no eaves overhang. The walls are smooth rendered and painted. There is a smooth rendered plinth painted. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; metal gutter and downpipe. Smooth rendered unpainted chimney stacks at each gable. Rear elevation: 2-storey plus basement; main block has pitched roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; dark toned ridge tiles; pvc gutters and pvc and modern metal downpipes; two chimneys, one at each extremity of main ridge, smooth rendered; modern pot. Wall of main block rendered with wet dash, with smooth rendered projecting eaves course; wall rises to two gabled dormers, which have pvc eaves boards and fascias, and pvc gutters; plastic ventilators in apex of right-hand dormer. Windows in main block are modern rectangular stained timber fixed lights with top-hung vents, set in plain reveals, with projecting concrete cills. Windows to first floor similar to those in dormers, except one to left is painted white. Projecting from the man block is a central gabled rear return which extends to the left-hand extremity in a lower lean-to roofed projection set back to the right-hand side. Walls, roofing, rainwater goods, and windows all similar to main block; doors to basement, and ground floor above, are modern stained ledged timber. Two modern steel fire escape stairs rise to the ground floor of the central rear return, supported on a cylindrical steel corner post, and a modern tiled balcony at the right-hand rear projection. Right-hand rear projection has double doors, modern glazed and panelled, in stained timber, to the ground floor, at balcony level, with a modern flush timber door to the basement. Rear yard is surfaced in cement screed, with wet dashed boundary walls to each side and to rear; rear gateway contains a pair of steel framed corrugated iron gates. A modern timber boarded outbuilding stands in the yard. Left-hand side of rear return has one window modern stained timber fixed light with top-hung side light; to the left of that, a large modern metal extract flue; a modern metal gas pipe runs across the side and rear walls of the rear return. Setting: A public house within terrace of Ann Street. Building line constant.

Building indicated on the first ordnance survey map of Ballycastle and in parts particularly the façade is unchanged from that date. A 3 bay wide 3 storey high early Victorian public house which retains original exterior features, and internal fittings on upper floors. Its charcter has been reduced by the removal of the original bar interior though original walls survive at this level.
