No.10 Court Square was built in or just prior to 1875, possibly as the residence for the manager (or assistant manager) of nearby Castle Gardens flax and tow spinning mill, which had been established by George Walker several years before this. It is located on the site of an earlier house that had been constructed c.1840 when the present Court Street (to which this part of what is now Court Square originally belonged) was laid out. The original occupant is recorded in the valuation books as John Stewart, who was succeeded by John Martin c.1896. Mr. Martin is listed in the 1901 census as an ‘estate baillif’, so the connection to the mill may have ceased by that date. John McAlpine is listed as the occupant in c.1913 and William Boyle c.1923. Robert George Wilson was living here in 1943 and Christopher and Ellen Emo c.1950-60s. Mrs. Emo may have retained the house until the late 1970s, but this is not certain.
