Exterior Description And Setting

Site (at the N end of Manor Street near the Parade) of a former public house of probable early nineteenth century origin, demolished c.1994, with site still empty. This building was described in 1977 as a ‘substantial two storey, late Georgian house...[with] central doorway with fine elliptical arch fanlight...flanked by wide canted bays which rise to pyramidal roofs’.

Historical Information

The town plan of Donaghadee, drawn up to accompany the valuation records of c.1836, shows the former house on this site with its canted bays. At this stage the building is noted as part of the estate ‘of the late R. Halliday’ with a rateable value of £34. With the coming of the railway to Donaghadee in 1860/1 (the line ended just to the NE of this site) the property became the Railway Hotel and latterly served as a public house.
