Exterior Description And Setting

Symmetrical entrance gateway to the NW of Carrowdore Castle at the junction of the Abbey Road and the Woburn Road. The gateway is constructed in random basalt rubble with red brick dressings to openings. In the centre is a tall semicircular carriage arch with a castellated parapet and a narrow castellated tower to either side with recessed cross motifs and mock arrow loops. Flanking are two semicircular arched pedestrian gates also with castellations. Each of these is joined to the remnants of what were once single storey rectangular one room ‘box’ sections with castellations, each of which had a single window opening to the front (NW), now blocked. The rears of both ‘box’ sections have been largely demolished. Elements of rough cast to stone work still visible. Largely simple (and probably not original) low wrought iron gates to all entrances. Low curving castellated wall in front of gate screen. This gateway is now in poor condition and appears to have been largely neglected in recent times.

This gateway was built by Nicholas de La Cherois-Crommelin in c.1818 at the same time as the construction of Carrowdore castle.
