Exterior Description And Setting

Large, relatively plain two storey roughcast terrace house originally built of c.1840-50 as two separate dwellings which were amalgamated in recent years. To front, one of the original house doorways has been blocked up and a window enlarged. The house is set on the north west side of Main Street, Greyabbey and belongs to a short terrace with two other contemporary properties. The front façade is asymmetrical and faces approximately SE. To the centre left is a recent panelled and glazed door with plain semicircular fanlight all encased with relatively plain painted stone pilasters and archivolt. To the left is a Georgian-paned sash window (6/6). To immediate right of the doorway was the door to the formerly separate property, however this has been completely blocked up and all that remains is the stone doorstep. To far right is a larger window with Georgian-paned double sash frame (6/6, 6/6)-this was a shop window at one point. To the first floor are three unevenly spaced windows, as that to ground floor left only shorter (6/3). The front façade is finished in painted roughcast with plain narrow surrounds to the windows. Exposed section of NE gable finished in painted render. No access to rear but most recent OS map shows a large return. The gabled roof is slated with Velux window to rear. Stone parapet andrendered chimney stack to the NE gable. Cast iron rw goods to front.

The short terrace to which this house belongs was built some time between 1834 and 1860. The building was originally two separate dwellings, with that to NE used as a shop during the mid to later 1900s. The properties were amalgamated some time between 1971 and 1975 (with the second door blocked up in the process).
