Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey semi-detached vernacular house of possible pre 1834 construction, now with concrete pantile roof and large gabled return to rear. The property is set on the NE side of Church Street, Greyabbey. The entire house is finished in rough cast and has a pitched pan tile covered roof. There is a Velux window and a small rendered chimney stack to the roof of the return, with two small rendered chimney stacks to the roof of the main house. PVC rw goods. The front (SW) elevation is asymmetrical and has left of centre front plain timber door with sash window, with Georgian panes, to the immediate left and a similar window to the far right. The NW gable is blank. To the rear there is a very large single storey ‘L’ shaped return with PVC windows made to resemble the timber sash windows at the front.

Historical Information

There are buildings shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, but it is difficult to tell whether they correspond exactly with the siting of the houses we see today. Thus, while it is possible that these houses originally date from the early nineteenth century (at least), it is difficult to be certain. Certainly their overall proportion suggests that they may belong to the large class of ‘ground floor’ houses in the village referred to in the OS Memoirs of c.1835.
