Exterior Description And Setting

Telephone kiosk close to the junction of Main Street and Newtownards Road, Greyabbey, of the type designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1924 (K6 model). Still in good condition and reasonably well maintained.

Historical Information

This telephone kiosk is one of the classic red variety used throughout the UK after 1924. The design was the work of (Sir) George Gilbert Scott (better known as the architect of Liverpool’s C of E cathedral) and came about as a result of a competition. His model, with minor variations to glazing bars, remained in widespread use up until 1985, after which date damaged kiosks were replaced by new modern designs This particular example in Greyabbey may have been installed in the 1930s. Classic red telephone kiosk (K6) designed originally by (Sir) George Gilbert Scott and once widespread throughout the UK. Not many of these kiosks survive in public precincts and this example is still in good condition.
