Exterior Description And Setting

Semi-detached single-storey with attic stone house, dated 1841, in a loose Tudor idiom. Rectangular on plan facing east and set back on the south side of Dromara Road, built as a single house with No.84 (HB19/05/122A). Pitched natural slate roof with black clay ridge tiles, a rebuilt redbrick chimneystack with terracotta pots and cast-iron rainwater goods to deep timber eaves. Decorative timber bargeboard to north and south gables. Snecked coursed rubblestone walling, cement pointing, rusticated ashlar quoins and painted brick surrounds to all openings. Camber-headed window openings with painted masonry hood mouldings, painted masonry sills and timber casement windows having some cylinder glass. Symmetrical front elevation has a central square-headed door opening flanked by window openings, all having painted masonry hood mouldings. Replacement timber panelled door opening onto single concrete step. Gabled south side elevation abutted by lean-to extension and outbuilding with single square-headed window opening at attic level with painted rendered walling. Rear elevation abutted by neighbouring house No.84 (HB19/05/122A). Gabled north side elevation has a single window opening to each floor with a hood moulding to the ground floor only. Setting: Concrete paved front area and footpath through front lawn enclosed to narrow avenue to east by hedging and decorative iron pedestrian gate. No. 86 Dromara Road appears on the second edition of the Ordnance Survey maps for the area in 1859 situated on the road south of Large Park. A plaque, bearing the Downshire arms, is located above the door of No.84 and records that both buildings were constructed in 1841. At this time it was depicted on the map as a single dwelling with 84 Dromara Road (HB19/05/122A); a small out office is shown to the rear of the house (later included with No. 86 after the dwelling was split). In 1861 Griffith’s Valuation records the occupant as a Mr. Daniel Murray who let the one and a half-storey house from the Marquis of Downshire at £17 per annum. Griffith recorded the property as a 1B class house, and valued the site at £3 10s. Daniel Murray occupied the house until 1874 when a Mr. Patrick Murray (an unknown relation) took over possession of the premises. Patrick lived at the house on the Dromara Road until 1900 when a Mr John Patrick Hogg, a Roman Catholic Farmer, occupied the house. The 1901 Census tells us that Hogg (24) lived at the house with his sister Elizabeth (20) and young brother William (12). Hogg and his siblings lived close to their father John Hogg who lived in the same Townland with his oldest daughter Mary Ann Hogg (34), a seamstress by trade. In 1911 John Patrick Hogg and his siblings continued to reside in the house which was recorded as a 3rd class dwelling which consisted of four inhabited rooms. The small out office at the rear of the house depicted on the second and third editions of the Ordnance Survey maps (1859-1903) may have been used to house a stable, cow house, piggery or a fowl house which were recorded on the 1911 census building return. This out office does not appear on the fourth edition of the maps in 1919-20, however remnants of this small structure have been incorporated into a modern return which was built in the mid-twentieth century. By 1913 Hogg had bought the house outright and in 1919 it was split into two dwellings, each valued at £1 5s. Hogg converted the house into two separate dwellings so that he could let one out to lodgers; a note of 1919 states that he rented the house at an annual rate of £3, however John Patrick Hogg continued to be recorded as the only occupant of both premises until the end of the Annual Revisions in 1929. In 1978 the first survey described both Nos. 84 and 86 Dromara road as a ‘single-storey double cottage with attic. Roof slated.’ The description stated that No. 86 possessed panelled dormer window frames and that recent additions had been added although it did not specify which house these latter additions pertained to. The 1972 Ordnance Survey map shows that a small return was added to the rear of the house at some stage during the mid-twentieth century (although the exact date is unclear). 86 Dromara Road was listed in March 1979 and in 1983 renovations were carried out on the roof and chimney of the house (NIEA File). Semi-detached single-storey with attic stone house, dated 1841 located on the south side of Dromara Road. Despite the division of the house into two separate dwellings, the Tudor style favoured by many estate owners contributes to the building's interest. It also has group value with number 84 (HB19.05.122A).
