Exterior Description And Setting

This is a detached single-storey hipped and rendered former gate lodge to Greenvale House (HB 09/15/007), built c. 1840, possibly to designs by William Farrell. The property is now in use as a private dwelling. To the rear there is are original single-storey returns, now joined and a further modern return. External walls are rendered throughout with some stone detailing. Both the main roof and the roof of the return are hipped and slated. The porch has a half-conical slated roof. There are wide overhanging eaves throughout the house. There is a large moulded double chimney to the centre of the main roof. Ridges are formed with plain ridge tiles. All rainwater goods are cast-iron. The front North-eastern elevation faces onto the entrance to Greenvale House. The front elevation is symmetrical and contains a central projecting semi-circular portico. The portico is supported on two rounded Tuscan columns with moulded caps. There are rectangular pilasters to each side of the opening with projecting moulded caps. Pilasters are supporting a plain rendered semi-circular frieze. The inside of the porch is semi-circular recessed reflecting the portico. It has a square-headed door with a replacement timber panelled door. There are square headed windows to either side of front entrance bay. Windows have cut-stone surrounds and sills, projecting cut-stone hoods, and 1/1 painted timber sliding sash windows. The South-eastern side elevation fronts onto Drum Road and has two sections; the main hipped house to the right, and the hipped returns to the left. The original part of the returns projects slightly forward of the front block and the wall of the modern return continues this line. Both elevations have cut-stone surrounds and sills, projecting cut-stone hoods, and 1/1 painted timber sliding sash windows. The North-western side elevation comprises three sections; the main hipped house to the left, and the hipped return to the centre, and the side of the modern return to the right. The original part of the returns projects slightly forward of the front block. Windows have cut-stone surrounds and sills, and 1/1 painted timber sliding sash windows. There are metal roller shutter with projecting metal boxes over. There is a square-headed door to the inside of the L-shaped return with dressings as previous. The remainder of the North-western side and South-western rear elevation is obscured by a timber picket fence. There are no further visible openings to the rear elevation. Setting: The former gate lodge is slightly set back from the main Drum Road on the corner of the main driveway into Greenvale House. The building is surrounded by a low rise rendered wall with cast-iron railings to the North-east and a high-rise rendered wall to the South-east. The wall has simple rendered square pillars with painted pyramidal stone caps. The vehicle entrance gate is located to the North-west. The house has a gravel parking area to the north. The house is set to the South-western side of the town centre at the beginning of the mainly suburban Drum Road.

Historical Information

This lodge was built some time between 1834 and 1857. It is shown on the revised OS map of the latter year and recorded –albeit as an annotation -in the valuation book of the following year.* It was built to serve Greenvale house, the (probably 18th century) residence of the Adair family, the owners of a flax spinning mill which originally stood to the south-west. The identity of the architect is not certain, however both Roawn and Dean feel confident enough to attribute it to William Farrell, on account of its similarity to one he was responsible for at Ely Lodge, County Fermanagh. Greenvale appear to have remained in Adair family hands until the late 1970s, when the former was converted to a hotel. The lodge remained in Adair ownership until at least 1956, but appears to have been sold in the early 1970s. Evaluation

This is a detached single-storey hipped and rendered former gate lodge to Greenvale House (HB 09/15/007), built c. 1840, possibly to designs by William Farrell. This is a well preserved example of a small picturesque mid-nineteenth-century gate lodge. The lodge is designed in a picturesque Classical style; with the Tuscan columns, portico and frieze enhancing the appearance. The strong architectural character combined with the good quality decorative rendered detailing adds variety and interest.
