Exterior Description And Setting

Two storied terraced house which is part of a loose group of three with aligning ridge on Dungiven Main Street. Front(North facing) façade has irregularly distributed windows and a flat head arch giving access to the rear. Painted render, timber casement windows. Natural slate roof, cast iron rainwater goods, three brick chimneys on the ridge. There is one chimney at each end of the house and the middle chimney aligns with the west side of the coach arch. Panelled entrance door centrally placed, with simple rectangular sand/cement architrave. Painted stone cills to windows. Two windows at first floor of different sizes due to height of arch. Larger window at first floor centrally placed between door and window to the West. Wrot iron gate to archway contemporary with house. Vertical rails at close spacing with spearhead detail at top. Bottom part of gate covered in corrugated iron. Timber ceiling to arch supporting rafters exposed and painted. Floor boards above. Access hatch in side wall at high level to number 153 . Original harling render with many coats of lime wash to rear elevation. Flat roofed two storey kitchen and toilet extension to centre of façade. Casement windows modern replacements of former sashes. Long garden to rear with more modern shed.

Historical Information

This building probably was rebuilt or renovated after the lease of Ogilby’s lapsed and the buildings reverted to the Skinner’s company. They began improvements to the town after this date. Because of town improvements the Company contributed towards the capital cost of the Limavady Dungiven railway. Towards the end of the 19th century the company began to dispose of their properties. A simple building. Of interest primarily for its inclusion in a terraced group of three buildings which along with number 15 adjacent add character to this part of main street. Wrought iron gate within arch of note. Improvements to the windows would greatly enhance this property.
