Exterior Description And Setting

A 2 storey brickfaced 3 bay house with raised hip roof. The house is set at right angles to Seacoast Road with avenue entrance and a rear access from Farlow Road. The walls are built of handmade local brick in Flemish bond with sandstone plinth. On the main facade the brickwork is neatly cut round the entrance door arch and likewise over each square headed window. The facade is symmetrical with central wide doorway having semicircular fanlight with delicate astragal forming a free flow design. The wide sash windows on the ground floor are divided into 16 panes while those on the first floor have 12. The east gable has a centrally placed window on the ground floor and another immediately above it on the first floor. In the gable there is a small round headed window. The west gable has 2 windows on the ground floor with a single one above a ground floor window .The small round headed window is repeated in the gable. The gable is smooth rendered. The north or rear elevation has an asymmetrical disposition of windows in 4 bays with narrow door and a staircase almost directly above it. All the sash windows have 12 panes though the window to the staircase is of different proportion. Six of the north windows have been increased in width and the brickwork crudely executed at the heads. Some windows are beginning to rot. The natural slated roof has 2 chimney stacks symmetrically arranged and wide apart dividing the roof in 3. The farmstead has two ranges of outhouses, that on the east is interesting. It is two storeys high redbrick with external steps to door at first floor. At ground floor there are low arched openings spaced close together. Both house and barn have dominance of wall over opening which creates architectural interest. The buildings are not in good repair and there is a general untidiness.
