Exterior Description And Setting

A 1½ storey villa built on a site overlooking the centre of Ballykelly village where the Sistrakeel Road meets Main Street. When it was built it would have enjoyed views of Lough Foyle and the Inishowen Hills. The villa has a T-plan with the entrance porch tucked into the angle of the T on the western side. Each principal room has a stone faced bay window now painted. The walls are finished in smooth rendering and painted. The fenestration is a mixture of tall sliding sash windows, single ones decorated with a cornice with modillions missing (they may not have been intended) a couplet of round headed windows to the porch and Suitor version of a Venetian window filling the broken pediments in the gable. These windows have the plain Suitor stone architraves. The house has a slated pitched roof with several chimney stacks Window sashes have neat slim astragals with narrow panes framing the larger panes. The house has been extended to the side and rear and unsympathetic dormers and windows used. However the principal facades retain their character. The house is in good repair. The northern gable has lost the returns of its broken pediment.

Historical Information

The house was built during Reverend Dills tenure and when Arthur Sampson was the Fishmonger’s agent. The facades have the characteristics of the Suitor hand but his may only have been an overseeing role. Under Agent Sampson local people prepared plans, which were submitted to the Fishmonger in 1849.
