Exterior Description And Setting

A four storey Georgian town house centrally placed in a block of three buildings. Two bays wide, in brick with rendered ground floor. Slate roof, cast iron rainwater goods, large brick chimneys on apex, small pots. Georgian sash windows two to each floor, diminishing in height on each level. First and second twelve panes. Third floor nine panes. Ground floor 20th century alteration. Two ground floor casement windows above eye level on street, are set in stone tile facade. Door with plain rectangular fanlight up three concrete steps to south west end of elevation. To rear window openings less ordered, but all have modern casements. Small return sits out and rises three storeys, door in base. Small brick lean-to outbuilding in yard perpendicular to house. Former stable block beyond wall at end of yard now renovated as a separate dwelling house.

Historical Information

Building indicated on 1831 Ordnance Survey Map (number 31) as is outbuilding to rear. Stable block behind was not part of curtilage it is linked to the flanking houses. On 1848 map number has been changed to 92 and a thin path between the stables leads to a square plot at the rear also numbered 92. The 1907 map indicates the back return for the first time. It is indicated as a bank on the most recent 1971 survey where it is numbered as 18. This was the Belfast Savings Bank which made the present alteration to the street frontage. In the early 1980s the T S B sold the building to Loughery and Agnew architects and it was used as their office until 1992. It is now rented to F G McGuigan Accountants. Evaluation

This former fine Georgian town house has been altered internally and to the rear. The front, except for the shopfront , still retains its original appearance. The amount of historic character which survives is much reduced. Listing can no longer be considered suitable.
