This house was built in 1876-77 for Miss Dorcas Boyd. The identity of the architect is not known; however, the Ruskinian Gothic styling, (and in particular the use of herringbone and chequerboard brick detailing), is very similar to the Masonic Hall of 1884 (now a Gospel Hall) on the opposite side of The Mall, which was the work of local architect John Henry Fullerton (1844-1924). The house seems to have been originally known as ‘The Cottage’, and later ‘Hartford Cottage’. Around 1889 it was in possession of James McFarlane , followed by Joseph Murphy c.1896, Elizabeth Cowan c.1910, Jane Girvan c.1918, Margaret Erskine c.1923, Eleanor Mackin c.1924 and James Murphy by 1929. William Orr is recorded as living there in early 1932 and William Strain in 1947. The house was advertised for sale in 1956 and a Mr. Rainey was in residence in mid-1975. By the latter date the property had taken on the name ‘Glendara’.
