Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey / two bay house set in a terrace and facing the sea on Osborne Promenade. Pitched artificial slate roof with unpainted rendered chimney to left end of ridge, tied into the larger building which abuts. Front pitch of roof has two wall head dormers with hipped roof and modern casement windows. Ogee rainwater goods. Front elevation faces SW and is line rendered and painted. Right bay with moulded arrises and two granite steps up to a boarded up door. It is set within a finely dressed semi-elliptical headed granite doorcase with moulded arrises. The doorway is framed by finely dressed Ionic columns supporting a moulded entablature. Over is a leaded peacock tailed fanlight (damaged). On ground floor left bay there is a large modern window (in an enlarged opening) which is boarded up and has a timber fascia over. There are three first floor windows - all are fixed lights with top hung transoms over and painted granite cills. Small area to front of house is enclosed by a cement rendered dwarf wall with granite coping and modern railings. Left gable is abutted by adjoining building 4&5 Osborne Promenade. Rear elevation was not inspected. Right gable is abutted by adjoining building 2 Osborne Promenade (HB16/12/004A).

Historical Information

Shown on the 1834 OS 6” map, along with the rest of this terrace. Noted in the 1835 First Valuation as being occupied by Mrs Osborne (this family also occupies nos 1 and 2 at this time). Measurements are 17ft6in x 36ft6in x 25ft. An old postcard of Osborne Promenade shows the façade of these houses to have had tripartite Georgian paned sash windows to ground floor and 6/6 sashes to first floor. Primary sources 1.
