Exterior Description And Setting

Right one of a pair of three-storey/ two-bay terraced houses fronting the south side of Sandys Street. Pitched natural slate roof with brick chimney at left. Half round metal rainwater goods, with downpipe to right. Plastic rainwater goods and downpipe to rear elevation. Walls of street façade are painted line render, with raised eaves course. Main entrance at right with modern six panel stained door, with narrow transom light over. At left is a single 1/1 sliding sash window. At first and second floors are two 1/1 sliding sash windows in line with ground floor openings; top windows are diminished in height. All windows have painted granite cills. Left gable is abutted by adjoining house (HB16/28/105B). Right gable is abutted by a lower building (HB16/28/104E); exposed section of wall is cement rendered. Rear wall is cement rendered, at left is a two storey flat roofed extension. Ground floor and first floor openings were not inspected. There are two modern top hung stained timber windows to second floor.

Historical Information

This building is shown on the 1835 OS town map. The first valuation book notes its occupier in 1838 as one Vaughan Quinn. It is described in the 1863 second valuation has being 20ft 3in long by 21ft 0in wide by two and one third storeys high. The present building is likely to be the one shown on the 1835 map, and is therefore of earlier date. Right one of a pair of three-storey/ two-bay terraced houses fronting the south side of Sandys Street. This very plain building has been extensively altered and is no longer of special architectural or historic interest. Its contribution to townscape character is recognised by inclusion in the Conservation Area.
