Exterior Description And Setting

Left one of a group of five three-storey/ two-bay terraced houses fronting south side of Sandys Street. Pitched natural slate roof with cement rendered chimney at left and rendered verge to right. Semicircular metal rainwater goods to facade with down pipe to right (shared with no 22). Rear pitch has plastic rainwater goods with downpipe to right. Walls of street façade painted line render, with raised eaves course. Main entrance, at right, comprises a modern six-panel (raised and fielded) painted timber door with narrow transom light over. No bracketed entablature. At left is a single 1/1 sliding sash window with exposed box. There are three irregularly spaced identical window openings at first and second floors; the right-hand ones are in line with door, and the top floor ones are diminished in height. The windows have granite cills. Rear wall is cement rendered. Two-storey extension abuts left bay, and continues as single storey at right. At first and at second floor right on main block is a modern top hung timber window. Extensions have flat roofs. Back wall has modern door at left and two modern windows at right; modern top hung window above. Rear yard is enclosed by wet dashed painted walls with single storey gabled outhouse to rear.

Historical Information

This building is shown on the 1835 OS town map. The first Valuation book notes its occupier in 1838 as one Hugh Chambers. It is described in the 1863 second valuation has being 19ft 0in long by 21ft 0in wide by three storeys high. Evaluation

One in a group of five three-storey/ two-bay terraced houses fronting south side of Sandys Street. Although the shell of the building remains it has been extensively remodelled and has lost most original features and character. Conservation area protection is more appropriate in this case.
